Originally released in 1996, Operation Heavenly was overshadowed by the tragic death of drummer Mathew Fletcher just before its arrival. The tour was cancelled, the band retreated, and its bright, buoyant songs never had the chance to shine. Now, nearly three decades on, Skep Wax gives the album the spotlight it always deserved_a reissue that feels more like a long-delayed debut.Mathew's drumming is witty, propulsive and full of life, carrying songs that fuse Heavenly's riot grrrl bite with a playful nod to Britpop. Tracks like `Ben Sherman' and `Fat Lenny' sparkle with melody and humour, but always with a sharper lyrical edge_mocking toxic boys, refusing to conform, and offering whip-smart commentary with charm. Their move from Sarah Records to Wiija ushered in brighter production and bolder artwork, while their connection with K Records continued through duets with Calvin Johnson, including the heartfelt `Pet Monkey'.Also included are two B-sides from the `Space Manatee' single_covers of The Jam's `Art School' and The Flamin' Groovies' `You Tore Me Down'_and a Serge Gainsbourg reinterpretation that shows the band's playful pop sensibilities at full strength. Operation Heavenly is a brilliant, bittersweet final act from a band at their creative peak.
