Wilco recorded it in Chicago between late 2000 and July 2001, Reprise decided it wasn't commercial enough, and the band ended up reclaiming the recordings. On September 29, 2001, they put them online for free. The commercial release would come later, on April 23, 2002, on Nonesuch. A beautiful way to start the story of one of the greatest American rock albums of the 2000s.

And the first thing Yankee Hotel Foxtrot does is make it clear that Wilco are no longer particularly interested in being simply Jeff Tweedy's alternative country band. Country is still there, of course, but buried under keyboards, loops, noise, distorted guitars, organs, samplers, and little studio accidents. Summerteeth had already begun to break the mold. Here they smash it to pieces. Not to show that they are experimental, but because the songs demanded something else.

“I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” is a pretty perfect statement of intent. It begins amid interference, piano, fragmented drums, and a guitar that seems to appear from another room. For almost seven minutes, the song moves forward as if it were trying to find its own shape while it plays. And it works. Not because it is complicated, but because Wilco understand that a song can also be a strange place to stay. Then comes “Kamera,” more immediate, more pop, but still full of noise and layers. The band can make a catchy song without stopping themselves from screwing it full of twists.

“Radio Cure” is more uncomfortable. Tweedy's voice appears suspended over an electronic background and drums that seem to walk with difficulty. “War on War” brings back melody and chorus, but underneath there is a pretty fucked up sadness: there are no great answers, only the realization that war, anxiety, and small defeats are part of the landscape. And then comes “Jesus, Etc.”, probably the song that proves that this whole experiment could hide a massive melody. Violins, guitar, restrained drums, and one of those phrases that seem simple until you try to write something similar.

The album is full of contradictions. “Ashes of American Flags” sounds like a road song that has seen too much. “Heavy Metal Drummer” recalls an idealized adolescence and does so with an almost pop lightness. “I’m the Man Who Loves You” seems poised to become a power pop song and, instead, fills up with guitars and arrangements. And “Pot Kettle Black” sinks back into that blurry space where Wilco seem to be playing from inside a broken radio.

But beneath all that experimentation, the songs are still there. That is the trick. Wilco do not use noise to hide that they have nothing to say. They use it to find new ways of saying it. Jeff Tweedy writes about relationships, anxiety, loneliness, memory, failure, and that pretty American feeling of keeping on going even though you have no fucking idea where you are headed. The lyrics are fragmentary, sometimes surreal, but almost always leave an image stuck in your head.

“Poor Places” takes the album into another territory. It starts delicately and ends by opening a kind of hole in the center of the album. The noise returns, the voices multiply, and “Reservations” appears afterward as a long emotional hangover. Seven minutes to close an album that has never been in too much of a hurry to get anywhere. Tweedy's sadness here does not need a crying guitar behind it. It is in the way he sings, in the spaces, in the things he leaves unfinished.

The story of the fight with Reprise almost seems too perfect to be true. A multinational corporation had a finished album in front of it and decided it didn't want to release it. Wilco left, got the rights, and ended up finding Nonesuch as the place to release it. The process itself was documented in I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, the Sam Jones film. And although all that has ended up becoming part of the legend, the interesting thing is that the conflict had a pretty simple reason: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot did not sound like the product they expected from Wilco.

Furthermore, the album ended up accidentally trapped in the context of 9/11. Its commercial release was originally planned for September 2001, its cover shows Chicago's Marina Towers, and songs like “Ashes of American Flags” or “War on War” acquired a meaning that no one could have predicted when they were written. It is one of those historical coincidences that can distort the reading of an album, but does not explain why the album works.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is, in the end, a rock album that refuses to behave like a rock album. It has country, pop, electronics, psychedelia, folk, noise, and experimentation, but it never loses the pulse of a song. Wilco do not need to prove that they are weird. They simply let the songs be as weird as they need to be.

And maybe that is why it still sounds so good. It is not an experimental album disguised as songs. It is an album of songs that decided to dynamite the disguise. Wilco took American rock, put it in a room full of cables, and started moving things around. The record label said no. They put it online for free. And they were right about one fundamental thing: the problem was never the album. The problem was that someone expected Wilco to make another one.

Limited deluxe edition box set. 7 vinyl records

Contains

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart

Kamera

Radio Cure

War On War

Jesus, Etc.

Ashes Of American Flags

Heavy Metal Drummer

I’m The Man Who Loves You

Pot Kettle Black

Poor Places

The Unified Theory Of Everything – Building Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

A Magazine Called Sunset

Remember To Remember (Hummingbird)

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart

Kamera

Radio Cure

War On War

Jesus, Etc.

Ashes Of American Flags (Stravinsky Mix)

Heavy Metal Drummer

I’m The Man Who Loves You

Pot Kettle Black

Poor Places

Snoozin’ At The Pageant – 7/23/02 The Pageant, St. Louis, MO

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart

I’m The Man Who Loves You

War On War

Kamera

Radio Cure

A Shot In The Arm

She’s A Jar

I’m Always In Love

Sunken Treasure

Jesus, Etc.

Heavy Metal Drummer

Pot Kettle Black

Ashes Of American Flags

Not For The Season (Laminated Cat)

California Stars

Red-Eyed And Blue

I Got You (At The End Of The Century)

Misunderstood

Far, Far Away

Outtasite (Outta Mind)

I’m A Wheel

Performances from Transmission – 9/18/01 Sound Opinions WXRT-Chicago, IL with Greg Kot &
