The former residence of the mill manager, the villa briefly served as the band's base of operations and would inspire one of The Ex's most influential and enduring albums in their more than 40-year history.

Originally released in 1983, Dignity Of Labour is “our idea of improvised and noisy industrial punk,” says The Ex frontman G.W. Sok, and it perfectly encapsulates not only these distinctive sounds but also the band's music in the decades to come.

At its peak, Van Gelder employed more than 1,000 workers. In 1981, it went bankrupt following acquisition and disinvestment by a multinational corporation. After saving the Villa from demolition by squatting in it, The Ex devoted themselves to meticulously researching newspaper articles, interviews, and business records to tell the story of the mill and the people whose work made it possible: an unprecedented example of independent archival activism.

With new drummer Sabien Witteman adding polyrhythmic accents and a group of agitators (with credits including a Martin guitar, bus engine, printing press, etc.), The Ex recorded eight studio tracks and then played them in the ruins of the mill while recording the playback, giving Dignity Of Labour an unsettling sense of space that is both cavernous and decaying.

This first vinyl reissue (on single LP format) includes a 61 x 46 cm poster and a 24-page booklet.
