Songs. Revelry. Grooves. Call it what you want, but really it’s just a fire, a light. Nueva Vulcano are like a fucking heater and lightbulb factory; they’ve spent more than ten years making the rest of us take off our jackets when we see them play. In the beginning—I assume you’ll remember—they played with flamethrowers and wore fireproof suits, but over the years they’ve learned to regulate the power of the dynamos, so they’ll last longer. The brazier has given quite a lot, you have to admit: four LPs, a book, a 10”, more than 350 concerts, hugs, lots of hugs and kisses, lots of kisses. I don’t know how many lightbulbs have been screwed in and unscrewed during all this time, but I’m sure it’s a hell of a lot.

One of the many things that makes Nueva Vulcano such good company is their fondness for spending money on releasing seven-inch singles. The new one is titled “Nombres y apellidos,” is part of Bcore’s Single Club, and was recorded by Santi García in Sant Pere Molanta and Sant Feliu de Guíxols. The A-side is dedicated to my friend Mike and features a drum fill stolen from Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, while the B-side pays tribute to one of those “one of our own” politicians. Both start off really well and end up even better. “El despertador” has plenty of winding alleys and builds up a steady incline. “Mike Woodward” is more direct; live, it’ll be a real belter, for sure. When they finish, you get up and kiss your wife. On Los Peces de Colores (BCore, 09), Artur Estrada sings louder and clearer than ever, allowing his incredible lyrics to shine as they should: lyrical wonders such as Níquel and Canela, with a touching simplicity and beauty; evocative ones like Dulce y ácida and África; amusing ones like Jen Trok, logopeda; dark ones like La maleza; or ones with an almost sociological intimacy like La Ley de Costas. Lyrics typical of someone like Artur Estrada, who simply does not know how to imitate others and has to invent his own language. That dirty and sometimes timid guitar, those monumental bass arrangements born from the compositional genius of Wences Aparicio, and that devil-possessed drumming by Albert Guàrdia form a sonically unmistakable ensemble that makes all of Nueva Vulcano's poetry—whether lyrical, aesthetic, musical, or conceptual—shine brighter than ever.

LP reissue with the cover and artwork in negative
There is something about the right of first refusal; about sticking your finger in and taking it to your mouth before eating the rest of the pie; about mastering yourself; about the “cotton test”; about exploring your own limits as a sporting act; about rehearsal.
